So You’re Hosting Your Family’s Annual Reunion

Kit Heath imageFamily reunions are the best time to show-off your beautiful family. Usually held during Christmas or New Year, family reunions can be a wonderfully fun way for your children and their cousins to meet and catch up. This event makes your filial bonds stronger and will help you create a lasting relationship with your family.

As much as it is an important event for the grown-ups, it’s also a great time for the little ones to enjoy family life. If it’s your turn to host your family’s annual gathering, this could present a lot of problems for you. The planning can be grueling which includes planning the menu and the activities for the day.

Party planning requires great logistics too. What if your family from another State will be coming over to attend the reunion? What if your house is too small to accommodate your whole family? You have to consider that there will also be kids around.

So first, call everyone in your family and confirm who is coming. This will at least give a bird’s eye view of what your budget would be. Check if anyone from out of state is coming over and who are bringing kids. If your guest room will not accommodate all your guests, call the nearest inn and ask for their rates. If you book a room earlier, you can get a discount.

However, only do this if the family member is already sure that he or she will be coming.
Food should be simple fare. A turkey will make a great centerpiece and your mother’s potato salad and apple pie are staples that should always be in the table. Keep in mind also that kids will be coming over so prepare special treats like lemon squares, brownies and cookies.

Plan activities for kids, this way, you and the other grown-ups will have the time for catch-up conversation. Assign one of older kids to think of games and be the moderator.

Last but not the least, before the big day itself, pick out a beautiful dress for your daughter and a snazzy sweater for your little boy. You can showcase you family heirlooms by having your daughter wear them on reunion day. She can finally wear that matching mother-daughter pearl necklace you gave her on her last birthday or the beautiful pair of emerald earrings her grandmother gave her last Christmas.

Your son will also look casual and clean in his solid-colored sweater and light-colored pants. Making your home look beautiful and preparing a delicious meal will set the right mood for the reunion.
